Our Constitution was written by white educated male landowners for their benefit.
Is it any wonder that multi-national corporations have developed without constraint? The Founding Fathers had no idea of how their 18th century capitalism would devolve into the oligarchy that we live under today or how our elected representatives would be paid by the oligarchy to maintain their power over the other 99% of Americans.
Our Constitution was written when slave ownership was accepted and women were treated as second-class citizens.
Is it any wonder that non-white Americans are discriminated against to this day? There is systemic racism and classism throughout almost every federal governmental institution and in many state governments as well. Women are treated as handmaids by the judicial system and gofers by our corporations.
Maybe we should define a new Constitution which reflects the values of the middle class in modern America.
The Earth's resources must be protected and efficiently reused rather than exploited for profit; it's the only home we have and we better take care of it.
Americans should be free from physical, mental, and financial harm. Discrimination based on sex, race, sexual orientation should not be tolerated.
Our health and healthcare system both rank at the bottom for developed countries because there is no profit in having healthy citizens. Americans should have access to high quality healthcare regardless of financial status or profit motive to our corporations.
We spend 30% more public money to educate our kids than the worldwide average, yet we still come out of college knowing less than graduates in other countries but still owing the banks an average of over $30,000. Banks exploit every opportunity to put us into debt. The greed of the money changers should be either against the law or heavily taxed.
We have over 500,000 homeless in America but over 15 MILLION vacant homes. Anyone who can't be exploited in this country is forgotten. There is no compassion in our economic system, only profit motive and greed.
Corporations are not people. They should have little say in governmental policy formation; in fact one of government's primary responsibilities should be to protect the 99% from the abuses of our economic overlords. Yet our politicians have become a bought-and-paid-for rubber stamp for whatever the vultures ask.
Our Constitution was written without any protections from a heartless economic system.
Capitalism in its purest form is supposed to promote the public good through supply and demand, having better ideas and products replace the old. When it degenerates into an oligarchy without public oversight it only enables and encourages greed and self-interest. It insists that we constantly consume, leading to unhealthiness, destruction and contamination of natural resources, never-ending debt, and fear of our neighbors. It demands profit above all else, even at the expense of the public good.
It's time for a new Constitution that allows the middle class to live the life that they choose
Government policies/law making/budgeting/taxation should be driven by experts, e.g. doctors, researchers, and engineers dedicated to the well-being of all rather than businessmen and politicians dedicated to the well-being of themselves.
Education should be based on the teaching of critical thinking and cooperation. Facts should be taught without influence by belief systems or profit motive.
High quality food, healthcare, education, and housing must be provided for all Americans. Without these basic needs being met no person has a chance of being a productive member of society.
We can break free from our profit- and consumer-driven lives if we have the will to do so. If we don't have the political will, then what other avenue do we have?
